Event Details
Dennis Williams' I've Cried the Blues follows Mattie, a determined African-American woman in 1940s Little Rock, Arkansas, dreaming of a better life beyond the segregated South. As she struggles to plant her family?s roots, Mattie navigates survival, sacrifice, and hope amidst racism, sexism, poverty, and inequality. Mattie fights to lift her family from darkness, torn between systemic injustices, personal setbacks, and World War II. She bears the emotional burden of her struggle, fighting for survival and her dreams. I've Cried the Blues explores love, loss, and the will to overcome. It tells the story of a woman who defies attempts to break her, using music as both weapon and refuge. Through blues, jazz, and gospel, the musical captures Mattie?s journey and the emotional cost of breaking free from oppression. This is a story of triumph over adversity and forces that seek to silence her.
