"The Front Page" is a fast-paced comedy by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, first produced in 1928. Set in a Chicago newsroom, it follows Hildy Johnson, a seasoned reporter planning to leave journalism to get married. Hildy's plans are upended when a notorious criminal, Earl Williams, escapes custody just before his execution.
As Hildy gets pulled back into the chaos, the story unfolds with corrupt officials, opportunistic journalists, and absurd antics. A satire of media ethics and sensationalism, the play critiques ambition, morality, and the chaos of news reporting through sharp dialogue and physical comedy. It inspired several adaptations, including the 1940 film His Girl Friday.
Directed by Sara James, Theatre Downtown puts its own unique spin on this classic screwball comedy with twists, turns, and surprises that will leave audiences laughing all night long!
